Wellgo Pedals and Straps: Models and Buying Tips

Updated · DrPedal is independent and not affiliated with Wellgo

Which to pick

Wellgo pedals and straps come from a Taiwanese pedal maker that supplies many bike brands and also sells budget-to-mid-range parts under its own name. The Wellgo parts most riders look for are the W8 Double Straps for foot retention on platform pedals, the magnesium MG-1 flat, and QRD quick-release pedals for bikes that need to pack small. For lighter, performance clipless pedals, look at Wellgo's premium brand, Xpedo.

Who is Wellgo?

Wellgo is a large pedal manufacturer based in Taichung, Taiwan. Much of its output is OEM: pedals fitted as stock parts to complete bikes.

Under its own name, Wellgo sells budget to mid-range pedals and straps, common replacement parts for commuters, BMX riders and anyone fixing up an older bike. Its lighter performance pedals are sold as Xpedo.

Wellgo straps explained

The W8 Double Straps are wide, two-band straps with a Velcro closure. They wrap over the forefoot on a platform pedal, replacing both toe clip and toe strap, so you can ride in normal shoes.

Before buying, check two things:

  1. Mounting: the strap ends need openings or edges on the pedal to anchor to. Check yours first.
  2. Availability: several retailers list the W8 as unavailable in late 2026. If you can’t find a pair, Power Grips do a similar job on metal cage pedals.

Wellgo pedals: MG-1, QRD and the rest

  • MG-1: a magnesium flat pedal. Magnesium is less dense than aluminum, which helps keep a big platform light.
  • QRD: a quick-release system. An adapter stays threaded in the crank and the pedal clicks on and off, which helps with travel bikes, car racks and storing a bike flat.
  • Clipless: Wellgo also makes SPD-compatible pedals, which take Shimano-style 2-bolt cleats.

Which Wellgo product should you buy?

  • Want retention without cycling shoes: W8 straps on a platform pedal.
  • Want a light flat on a budget: MG-1.
  • Bike goes in a car or on a train often: QRD pedals, or see our folding pedals guide.
  • Replacing a broken stock Wellgo pedal: match the thread (9/16” or 1/2”) and pedal type, then pick from our flat pedals or cage pedals guides.

Wellgo vs other budget brands

Against Shimano, Wellgo’s clipless pedals usually sit in a lower price tier, while Shimano spares and cleats are easier to find. If you ride SPD every day, Shimano is the safer long-term pick.

For straps, Power Grips use a diagonal strap on a metal cage pedal that tightens as you straighten your foot. Classic toe clips from MKS hold the foot more firmly. Compare all three in our toe clips and straps guide.

Wellgo: FAQ

Are Wellgo pedals any good?

They are solid budget and mid-range parts. Wellgo makes pedals for many bike brands, so you may already be riding one. For hard trail use, premium flats from brands like DMR offer more serviceability.

What thread are Wellgo pedals?

Check the listing. Most adult bikes take 9/16" pedals, while bikes with one-piece cranks need 1/2". The left pedal is reverse threaded.

Do Wellgo straps fit any pedal?

No. The W8 is made for platform pedals with openings or edges where the strap ends can anchor. Check your pedal before buying.
