Who it's for
Good fit
- Riders on any current Wahoo Speedplay or Powrlink Zero pedal
- Riders replacing worn cleats on legacy Speedplay Zero pedals
- Riders who want float anywhere from fixed to very free
Look elsewhere if
- Riders who find Speedplay hard to unclip (the gray Easy Tension cleat suits them better)
- Older Speedplay Light Action, X-Series or other non-Zero pedals
- Anyone with 2-bolt mountain bike shoes only
Compatibility
- Pedals
- Wahoo Speedplay Zero, Comp, Aero, Nano and Powrlink Zero; legacy Speedplay Zero
- Not compatible
- Speedplay Light Action, X-Series and other older non-Zero Speedplay pedals
- Shoes
- 4-hole Speedplay soles, or standard 3-bolt road soles with the 3-hole adapter
- Covers
- Wahoo Speedplay Cleat Cover kit
Pros and cons
Pros
- Float adjusts from 0° to 15° on the cleat, so one cleat covers fixed to very free
- Fits every current Wahoo Speedplay pedal plus legacy Zero pedals
- Mounts to both 4-hole and standard 3-bolt road shoes
- Low 8.5 mm cleat stack on 4-hole shoes
Cons
- The spring is in the cleat, so grit and walking wear affect how well you clip in
- Bulkier than SPD-SL or Look Keo cleats; covers are close to essential
- The 3-hole adapter adds 3 mm of stack
- No tension screw: changing spring feel means buying the Easy Tension cleat
What Speedplay cleats are
Speedplay cleats hold the spring that grips the pedal. The pedal is a small double-sided “lollipop”, and the cleat closes around it.
That is why this cleat is larger than an SPD-SL or Look Keo cleat, why it sets the spring tension (there is no tension screw on the pedal), and why its condition decides how well you clip in. The gray Easy Tension cleat is identical apart from a lighter spring.
Speedplay pedals and cleats: what works with what
These cleats fit every current Wahoo Speedplay pedal: the Zero, the entry-level Comp, the Aero, the lightweight Nano and the Powrlink Zero power-meter pedals. They also fit legacy Speedplay Zero pedals made before Wahoo’s relaunch. That cross-compatibility covers the Zero family only; older Light Action or X-Series pedals need their own cleats.
See Wahoo Speedplay pedals and our cleat compatibility chart.
3-hole vs 4-hole mounting
Speedplay cleats bolt on with four M4 screws in a square. A few road shoes are drilled for this 4-hole pattern; most only have the 3-bolt road pattern.
- 4-hole shoes: the cleat mounts straight to the sole. Cleat stack is 8.5 mm, and the pair weighs 100 g.
- 3-bolt shoes: first bolt the included adapter plate to the sole with three bolts, then fix the cleat to the adapter with the four M4 screws. Stack rises to 11.5 mm and weight to 142 g per pair.
Most riders need the adapter, since most shoes are 3-bolt. For replacement or longer screws after adding a shim, see BikeFit 13mm Speedplay cleat screws.
Setting the float limit screws
Float on these cleats is adjustable from 0° to 15° using two limit screws on the cleat: one sets how far your heel can swing in, the other how far it can swing out. You unclip by rotating past the limit, so the screws also set how far you twist to get out.
To set them:
- Fit the cleats with float fully open, lined up with your foot’s natural angle.
- Ride on a trainer and notice where your heels sit; most riders use only part of the range.
- Adjust each screw so the limit sits just beyond where your heel naturally moves. The cleat instructions show which direction reduces float.
- Check you can still unclip easily, then set the other shoe. Feet often need different settings.
Close both limits for a fixed cleat; with knee pain, leave more float.
Care and wear
Keep these cleats clean and covered when you walk. Grit in the cleat makes clipping in vague or sticky, and pavement wears the surfaces the pedal sits on.
- Use the Wahoo Speedplay Cleat Cover kit off the bike; see cleat covers.
- Rinse grit out with water rather than prying at the spring.
- Check the cleat screws and adapter bolts regularly; a loose cleat creaks and shifts.
- Replace the cleats if entry becomes unpredictable, they release too easily, or the body cracks.
For alignment tools, wedges and shims, see cleat fitment and cleat hardware.

Wahoo Speedplay Standard Tension Cleats: FAQ
Which Speedplay pedals do these cleats fit?
All current Wahoo Speedplay pedals (Zero, Comp, Aero, Nano and the Powrlink Zero power pedals) and legacy Speedplay Zero pedals. They do not fit older Light Action, X-Series or other non-Zero Speedplay pedals.
What is the difference between black and gray Speedplay cleats?
Spring tension. Black is Standard Tension; gray is Easy Tension, which is easier to clip in and out of. Fit, float range and pedal compatibility are the same.
Are Speedplay cleats walkable?
They are designed to be walked on short distances, but walking wears the cleat and packs grit into the spring. Use the Wahoo Speedplay Cleat Cover for anything more than a few steps; see cleat covers.
Do Speedplay pedals come with cleats?
Yes. Wahoo ships the Zero, Aero and Nano with the black Standard Tension cleat and the Comp with the gray Easy Tension cleat. You buy cleats separately as replacements or to change tension.
