Crankbrothers Double Shot 2 Hybrid Pedals (Orange/Black)

Updated · Spec review from manufacturer data

Quick take

The Crank Brothers Double Shot 2 is a hybrid pedal: one side takes Crankbrothers cleats, the other is a flat platform for ordinary shoes. It suits commuters, hybrid-bike riders and anyone easing into clipless who still wants to ride in trainers some days. If you always ride clipped in, a double-sided pedal such as the Candy 1 is simpler.

  • Racers who want to clip in instantly from any side
  • Riders who never ride in normal shoes
  • Riders committed to Shimano SPD cleats

Shoes
2-bolt MTB or commuter shoes on the clip side; any shoe on the flat side

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Ride clipped in or in everyday shoes on the same bike
  • Same cleats as every other Crankbrothers pedal
  • A gentler route into clipless than a pure clip-in pedal
  • Orange/black finish stands out

Cons

  • Only one side clips in, so you sometimes flip the pedal first
  • Cleated shoes feel less secure on the flat side
  • No tension screw; release is set by the cleat

What the Crank Brothers Double Shot 2 is

The Double Shot 2 is a hybrid pedal. One side has Crankbrothers’ clip mechanism, which accepts the same 2-bolt brass cleats as the Eggbeater, Candy and Mallet. The other side is a flat platform for regular shoes.

The appeal is flexibility. Clip in for a long ride, and ride to the shops in trainers without changing pedals. It’s also a lower-stress way to learn clipless, since you can ride the flat side until you’re ready.

The Double Shot range comes in three levels: 1, 2 and 3. The 2 sits in the middle. All three share the same idea and the same cleats.

Crank Brothers Double Shot 2 vs double-sided clipless

Double Shot 2 (hybrid) Double-sided clipless (e.g. Candy 1)
Ride in normal shoes Yes, flat side Not comfortably
Clip in from either side No, one side only Yes
Learning curve Gentle; can ride flat first Clipped in from day one
Best for Commuting, hybrids, mixed use XC, gravel, racing

If you always ride in cycling shoes, the flip-to-find step is a small annoyance a double-sided pedal avoids. The Candy 1 is the obvious Crankbrothers alternative. If you swap between shoes a lot, the hybrid is worth that annoyance.

Clipless pedals on a hybrid bike

Hybrid pedals are popular on flat-bar hybrid bikes because most rides there are short and mixed. Two tips make them easier:

  1. Learn the flip. Tap the back edge of the pedal with your toe to rotate it, then find the clip side. Within a week it becomes habit.
  2. Pick walkable shoes. A 2-bolt shoe with a recessed cleat lets you walk normally and still grip the flat side if you can’t find the clip side.

For more options, see single-sided clipless pedals with platforms. The clipless pedals guide explains how Crankbrothers compares with Shimano SPD.

Cleat setup

The Double Shot 2 uses Crankbrothers cleats. For new riders, the Easy Release cleat is the friendliest option:

  • Easy Release: 0° or 6° float, 10° release
  • Standard: 6° float, 15° or 20° release

Swap the cleats left to right to switch between the two release angles. Fit each cleat with the ball of your foot over the axle or slightly behind it. The cleats guide covers alignment in detail.

The Double Shot has no spring tension screw, so if you find it hard to unclip, change the cleat setting rather than looking for an adjuster.

The orange/black colourway

The orange/black Double Shot 2 is mechanically the same as the other colours. Orange stands out on a dark bike and suits riders who like visible kit. Expect the orange to show scuffs from shoes on the flat side over time.

Care and wear

  • Cleats: brass cleats are a wear part. Replace them when release turns vague or early.
  • Flat side: clean grit off regularly so ordinary shoes keep their grip.
  • Bearings: if you notice play or roughness, get the pedal serviced; Crankbrothers sells pedal refresh kits.
  • Threads: 9/16” x 20 TPI. Grease them; the left pedal is reverse threaded (see which pedal is reverse threaded).

See the Crankbrothers brand page for the rest of the range.

Alternatives to consider

Crankbrothers Double Shot 2 (Orange/Black): FAQ

Is the Crank Brothers Double Shot 2 one-sided?

Yes. One side has the Crankbrothers clip mechanism and the other is a flat platform. You flip the pedal to the side you need.

Can I use Shimano SPD cleats with the Double Shot 2?

No. The clip side needs Crankbrothers cleats. Your 2-bolt shoes will still fit, but you'll need to swap the cleats.

Does the Double Shot 2 come with cleats?

Yes. Crankbrothers says the Double Shot 1 ships with Easy Release cleats; check your Double Shot 2 box for which type is included. Both types have 6° float.

Can I ride the Double Shot 2 in normal shoes?

Yes, on the flat side. That's the point of a hybrid pedal. Flat-soled shoes with some grip work best.
